Sully

Resident Smile Maker, Therapy Assistant

Meet Sully, a 2-year-old Catahoula/Mastiff! He is Tammy Anderson’s sidekick but is also well-loved by all at BAC. He has a special story. You see, almost 2 years ago, he was rescued by the animal shelter from a large hoarding case in Cheyenne. Sixty-four large breeds, to be exact, all trapped in a house, and no human interaction to speak of. You can only imagine the conditions they were living in. For the first 6 months, he was at the Andersons, he had huge anxiety and tucked his tail as tight as he could and ran at full speed to get to his safe spots: outside and downstairs to his kennel. It was discovered during a routine vet visit that Sully had a condition called entropion, which caused his bottom eyelids to roll in, ulcers, impaired sight, and the inability to see eyelashes.

So, the amazing vet team began his “puppy Lasik.” He had to have this twice in 6 months, and the second time was the charm! He began to interact with his human family and doggie family, even began feeling very protective of his house, and barked for the first time! Tammy, a certified Animal Assisted Psychotherapist, has worked with him over the last 10 months since coming to BAC to help him with his anxiety and trust in people.

Sully is an incredible example of learning to trust even when coming from a traumatic past. He is also a rare exception to the dogs who came from this case, as many are so anxious and traumatized they will elope and are rarely caught. This boy has become so excited to come to BAC he will run to the door, tail wagging, and excitedly wait for his Tammy to open it! Within the last 4 months, he has felt safe enough to wag his tail the whole way down the hallway, smile, and even go to his own “Sully Parking” spot in the lobby ahead of his mom and sit and wait. If you are lucky enough to sit in the “Scratchy Chair” next to Sully, he will welcome loads of ear scratches and head scratches. He is especially fond of kiddos. If you are blessed enough when he meets you or gets to know you and puts his nose to your nose, you have been chosen to join his pack!

He is in training for Animal Assisted Psychotherapy, “a goal-directed intervention in which an animal is meeting specific criteria as an integral part of the treatment process” (American Veterinary Medical Association). Sully is a “designer breed” who is one-of-a-kind and shows that overcoming trauma and doing healing work can look very different in people and animals! We look forward to seeing Sully continue to blossom in his healing journey!
